Marathon wins Legion regional title again

MARATHON CITY - Landen Williamson held Wittenberg to four hits as the Marathon Legion baseball team advanced to the Class A state tournament for the third straight year with a 12-2 win Sunday.

Williamson also went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI, and also struck out eight in the win.

Marathon improved to 24-11 overall and plays either Osseo or Altoona at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Prairie du Chien.

Matt Braun drove in three runs for Marathon, which is making its fifth state appearance overall. Carter Hanke went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Hunter Seubert also drove in two runs. Noah Dirks went 2-for-2 with a double.

Matt Kapitz went 2-for-3 to lead Wittenberg and Keagan Miller doubled.

Trevor Groshek was the losing pitcher.

Marathon, which dropped the opening game in the regional, won two games on Saturday — 10-3 over Iola and 4-0 over Wittenberg.

Williamson went 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI against Iola, and Ryan Gassner went 2 for-2 with a home run.

Karter Underwood was the winning pitcher and had five strikeouts.

Nate Korb took the loss for Iola.

Gassner held Wittenberg to a hit and struck out 14. He walked just one.

Gassner also doubled and Hunter Seubert went 2-for-3.

MacLean Alwes was the losing pitcher.

16U Pony League Nationals 

STERLING, Va. - Wisconsin went 1-1 in the final day of the tournament.

Wisconsin finished with a 4-3 record in the tournament and a season mark of 22-10-1 overall.

Emily Gwidt was the winning pitcher as Wisconsin beat the European Jr. Pride 5-3.

Wisconsin then ended the tournament with a 5-3 loss to New Jersey Sharks Elite. Gwidt and Rachel Bolder both had a RBI, and Phillips Sauter and Jojo Baratka both had two hits.
