Down-to-the-wire games highlight Week 2

High school football teams put out their first impressions a week ago and some local teams are looking to bounce back or build on Week 1 performances.

Wisconsin Rapids couldn't have asked for a better start to the season. A week ago the Raiders defeated D.C. Everest 27-21, and on Friday Wisconsin Rapids defeated Wausau West in dramatic fashion. Rapids trailed 9-0 entering the fourth and scored two touchdowns in the final 12 minutes, including the game-winner with just 1:01 left in a 13-9 come-from-behind victory.

D.C. Everest bounced back from the aforementioned loss to Rapids in Week 1 with a 28-0 shutout victory over Marshfield.

The CloverWood Conference featured two battles of undefeated teams with Abbotsford, coming off a 49-6 drubbing of Greenwood, facing off against Assumption. It appeared to be a tale of two halves as Abbotsford controlled the first half with Brock Halopka racking up 130 rushing yards in the opening 24 minutes and the Falcons led 21-7 at halftime. But Assumption responded with a huge third quarter to pull within 21-20. Abbotsford escaped with a win as the Royals' last-second field goal went begging. The win for Abbotsford could have big CloverWood title implications later in the year.

In the other battle of undefeated squads in the CloverWood, Athens downed Gilman as Tyson Sommer returned a fumble for a score and Jake Stange scampered through the Pirates defense. Gilman scored the first touchdown of the game but Athens responded with 40 unanswered points and defeated the Pirates 40-13.

Loyal backed up a somewhat surprising 41-12 throttling of Owen-Withee with a 40-0 rout of Greenwood. After Week 2 only Abbotsford, Loyal and Athens remain unbeaten.

The Merrill Bluejays who were blown out by Superior last week had to deal with a concussion to future Wisconsin Badger Jake Collinsworth who was out with a concussion. The Bluejays' defense struggled again in Week 2. A year ago Merrill defeated River Falls by 35 points and on Friday night, the Bluejays suffered a 21-14 loss to fall to 0-2 with a home game against Lakeland looming.

Not that anybody expected Edgar to lose at this point in the year, but nonetheless it's been quite an impressive start for the Wildcats. Edgar cruised to a 50-0 win over Pittsville on Friday and have now outscored opponents 85-0 through two weeks.
