West shocks No. 2 ranked Appleton North

USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

WAUSAU - Don’t look now, but the Wausau West football team just opened some eyes around the state.

With its first win of the season crossed off the to-do list last week, West pulled off its first monumental upset of the season Friday by upending No. 2 ranked Appleton North 20-17 at Thom Field.

The win leaves the Warriors at 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Valley Football Association North Division.

“Right now I have a ton of Warrior pride being a former player,” West coach Jason Foster said. “We have a bunch of kids who work super hard and believe in the plan we have.

“After last week, we talked about how we need to believe and that win was going to be our reality and a habit. It was a great team effort on all three levels. The guys played well and hit hard.”

Clinging to a three-point lead and facing a third and seven from around their own 20-yard line, Mitch Michalske grabbed a screen pass and raced to the end zone to put West up 20-10.

North made things interesting when a fourth and long with two minutes left in the fourth quarter resulted in a long touchdown pass to bring it with a field goal.

However, West recovered the ensuing onside kick. North only had one timeout left and when the Warriors picked up a first down, they were able to run out the clock.

“One of keys for the season is to improve every week and build confidence, and we did it again tonight,” Foster said.
