Three local athletes earn top-10 finishes at SPASH CC Invitational

STEVENS POINT - Marissa Ellenbecker, Brooke Jaworski and Axel Treinen each earned top-10 finishes at the SPASH CC Invitational at Standing Rocks County Park.

Edgar’s Ellenbecker finished the meet with the second quickest time (19:29.6). Edgar placed 17th as a team.

Jaworski earned the fifth-best girls time at 19:52.5 to help Wausau West earn the fifth highest team score.

Treinen placed sixth on the boys side with a time of 17:02.8. Wausau East placed 10th as a team.

Both the SPASH girls and boys teams earned the top team scores at the invitational.

The D.C. Everest girls team placed fourth. Katelyn Spooner (12th) and Malorie Schmoll (25th) led the Evergreens.

Mariah Haight earned the 15th best individual time to help Wausau East take home a ninth place finish. Merrill placed 14th overall.

On the boys side, D.C. Everest placed sixth as a team. Isaiah Winowiski placed 13th while Trevor Zunker finished in 25th.

Auburndale Invitational

AUBURNDALE - The Stratford volleyball team placed first at the Auburndale Invitational, edging Spencer in three sets in the title game.

Stratford earned wins over Mosinee (26-24, 25-16), Pacelli (26-24, 25-19), Columbus Catholic (26-24, 26-28, 16-14), Pittsville (25-21, 25-11) and Prentice (25-11, 25-16) before knocking off Spencer (20-25, 25-15, 15-13).

MaKayla Krall posted 48 kills and 31 digs on the day to lead the Tigers. Mazie Nagel added 42 kills, 30 digs and a team-high 16 aces. Katie Krueger chipped in with 27 digs while Brooke Peterson had nine aces.

Before the title match, Spencer earned sweeps over Assumption (25-22, 25-17), Auburndale (25-17, 25-20), Prentice (25-12, 25-13), Iola-Scandinavia (25-18, 25-12) and Pacelli (25-19, 25-20).

Liz Endreas had a team-leading 36 kills while Jenna Schober added 35 kills and six aces. Sadie Mercier had 61 assists while Jenna Rogers contributed 52 digs.

“It was a very solid day for us,” Spencer coach Buff Heller said. “Losing the title game to a solid team like Stratford is something we can build on. All 12 girls contributed well all day.”

Mosinee placed fifth at the invite, losing its first two before winning its final four matches. Mosinee beat Pittsville, Assumption and Columbus Catholic twice.

Janae Antosch posted 24 kills, 70 assists and 23 digs to lead Mosinee. Hanna Nest added 34 kills and 19 digs while Brooke Wierzbanowski chipped in 18 aces and 43 digs. Halle Nest contributed 27 kills with Sophie Kamke recording 13 blocks.

Shawano Invite

SHAWANO - The Wausau West volleyball team won three of five matches at the Shawano Invite.

The Warriors lost to Kewaunee twice, 26-24, 25-20 and 23-25, 25-23, 15-10, while earning wins over Rhinelander (25-19, 20-25, 15-9), Clintonville (25-20, 25-9) and Oconto Falls (25-23, 25-19).

Paige Brandenburg led the Warriors with 49 kills, 52 digs and six aces. Caitlin Deaton added 38 kills, 11 digs and seven aces.

Ieden Sheehan led Wausau West with nine aces while adding in 25 digs. Skylar Rickstad chipped in with 39 digs and seven aces.

Merrill invite

MERRILL - Morgan Wardall had 24 kills, seven aces and five digs to led the Bluejays to the title at their own invite with a 6-0 record.

Merrill beat Tomahawk 26-24, 24-17, Medford 25-13, 25-17, Stanley-Boyd 25-17, 25-10, Green Bay Southwest 25-14, 25-14 and Athens 25-20, 25-21.

Taylor Cichy had 61 digs, while Maddix Bonnell had 44, Kelsie Belfori 23 and Lindsey Casper and Madison Weix 22 each.

Seneca Invite

SENECA - The Edgar volleyball team earned a comeback win over Brookwood to take third place at the Seneca Invite.

Edgar beat Brookwood by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 15-12.

The Wildcats also earned wins over Bascobel (18-25, 25-18, 17-16) and Cassville (25-21, 25-17). Edgar dropped one match at the invite, losing to Seneca (25-11, 25-23).

Marcey Wirkus led Edgar with 25 kills while Rachel Heiden added 14 kills. Lindsey Schneeberger added 74 assists and nine aces. Daria Hoesly chipped in six aces.

WAUSAU - Jordan Thao scored in the 72nd minute to snap a tie and give the Lumberjacks the win in the nonconference game.

East’s Adam Hahn scored in the 48th minute to tie the game 1-1.

Sam Petralia had nine saves for East.

WAUSAU - West quarterback Trevor Cunningham went 11-of-17 for 209 yards and two touchdowns as the Warriors upset the Lightning.

Cunningham connected with Mitch Michalske for a 80-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter which gave West a 20-10 lead. The scored capped a run of 13 straight points by the Warriors, who improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the Valley Football Association-North Division.

West travels to Kaukauna Friday.

Peterson had a short touchdown run and also connected with Dylan Ellenbecker for a 26-yard score in the final two minutes for the Evergreens, who trailed 26-14 entering the fourth quarter.

Sam Stroik rushed for 77 yards for the Evergreens.

RHINELANDER - The Bluejays rushed for 226 yards and improved to 2-2 overall and 2-0 in the Great Northern Conference.

Braeden Dorn rushed for 94 yards and a 2-yard touchdown and Zach Mootz had 73 yards and a short touchdown run for the Bluejays, who led 15-6 at the half.

The Bluejays host Medford on Friday for a showdown for first place in the conference.

Bolz rushed for 176 yards on 18 carries and added a pair of touchdown runs. Bolz also added a 33-yard interception return in Medford’s 28-point first quarter.

Eric Soderberg scored Mosinee’s lone touchdown on a 23-yard reception from Ben Vandehey in the fourth quarter. Soderberg caught three passes for 41 yards overall.

Justin Stubbe rushed for 88 yards on 10 carries.

WITTENBERG - The running duo of Xander Schmitz and Andy Tepp powered the Cardinals to a Central Wisconsin Conference-8 road win.

Schmitz carried the ball 22 times for 135 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Tepp added 118 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

The Chargers fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the CWC-8.

EDGAR – Cole Hoffman scored the lone touchdown for the Tigers as they edged the Wildcats in their Marawood Conference matchup.

Hoffman had a combined 100 yards, while Kamren Bornbach totaled 83 yards in the Tigers victory.

Shawn Bunkelman scored the first and only goal for the Wildcats, but a failed two-point conversion attempt ended up being their ultimate downfall.
