Today’s youth are lazy goldbrickers

Letters to the editor

EDITOR: I have had cause to wonder why so many young people are not working. Many do a thing called “sofa sitting,” where they find someone who agrees to let them sleep on their sofa instead of renting an apartment. Why no apartment? Because they have no job.

Why no job? That’s what baffles me. As I drive around town I see help-wanted signs everywhere. I know business people in town who are itching to hire young people but no one comes in. I have highlighted outstanding jobs to youngsters and they fail to act on them, preferring to remain unemployed. I know business people who have had to shut down their businesses because they cannot get workers to come to work, and if they come, they come late making the job less profitable because it takes longer.

In Buffalo, New York, my dad would kick me out of the house with a shovel and tell me to go shovel driveways for money. I have lived here for 12 years and never have I seen a youngster out doing this. There is a substantial group of young people in our town who are either too lazy to work, so they mooch, or they have an illegal business going on the side. And those who do look for work, well many have arrest records, felonies, misdemeanors and the whole nine yards on their ledgers. Sad.
