Brooke Jaworski, Axel Treinen headed to state for cross country

STEVENS POINT - SPASH’s Ricky Perez won the Division 1 Stevens Point Sectional with a time of 16:10.

The SPASH boys team also earned the top team score, earning them a place in the upcoming state meet. Derek Franz (fourth), Liam Belson (sixth) and Mark Stoskopf (seventh) also finished in the top 10 for the Panthers.

“Today was the first time that we looked like the team we thought we could be,” SPASH coach Donn Behnke said. “Ricky is a tremendous talent and he went out there to run his hardest 5,000 meters of his life.”

Wausau East’s Axel Treinen earned a spot at state by placing second, while D.C. Everest’s Isaiah Winowiski finished ninth to qualify.

In the girls race, Wausau West’s Brooke Jaworski placed first with a time of 19:12. She will race at state as an individual. Wausau East’s Mariah Haight and Wisconsin Rapids’ Willow Sering will also race at state as individuals following fifth and ninth place finishes, respectively.

The SPASH girls team earned a state berth after edging Hortonville and Appleton North for the top team score. Maddie Hyland (sixth), Grace Belson (eighth) and Madelyn Schneider (10th) led the Panthers with top-10 finishes.

Amherst Sectional Division 3

STEVENS POINT - Rosholt’s Adam Rzentkowski finished in 16:37 to finish first at Standing Rocks Park.

The Rosholt boys team earned a trip to state by taking the top team score. Sawyer Fleming placed third, while Jonah Guzman rounded out the top 10 for the Hornets.

The Amherst boys team also advanced to state by placing second. The Falcons were led by Cole McKenzie’s ninth-place finish. Iola-Scandinavia’s Joe Makovic will also compete at state as an individual after finishing second.

In the girls race, the Rosholt and Wittenberg-Birnamwood teams advanced to state while finishing first and second, respectively. Marion’s Delaney Greene-Gretzinger won the girls race in 19:09.

The Hornets were led by Jordan Zdroik (third), Jenna Trzebiatowski (seventh) and Brittany Gagas (eighth), while Emily Norrbom (sixth) and Paige Norrbom (11th) led the Chargers. Iola-Scandinavia’s Erika Kisting (second), Leighten Fischer (fifth) and Jada Beacom (ninth) will all race at state after qualifying as individuals.

“My goal was to stick with Delaney (Greene-Gretzinger), and even though I didn't do that, I'm still proud that I gave it my all for this meet,” said Kisting. “I know what I have to work on for state. My goal is to beat the 19-minute mark.”

WAUPACA - Trey Ulrich secured his ticket to state by taking third overall with a time of 16:55.60.

Ulrich helped the Raiders (115) to a third place finish overall as a team, just missing a state berth by four points. Mason Webster led the Hatchets with a time of 17:57.81, while Grayson Barrett was the top-finisher for Mosinee, finishing in 17:57.36.

Franny Seidel claimed a third-place finish, grabbing a ticket to state and helping the Raiders’ girls team finish third as well. Iras Shira was the top runner for Mosinee, while Haley Voermans-Dea rounded out the top 10 and helped Tomahawk to a eighth-place team finish.

Clintonville 2, (3-1)

CLINTONVILLE - Mosinee earned a Division 3 regional title by taking down second-seeded Clintonville in a penalty kick shootout.

The Truckers earned a quick lead by scoring twice in the first 19 minutes. Mosinee cut the deficit to one before the half on a goal from Cody Jay off an assist from Kirill Romashov in the 24th minute.

Jay scored again, this time off an assist from Jarret Herring, in the 54th minute to tie the game.

In the shootout, Romashow and Herring each scored while Clintonville was unsuccessful on their first two shots. After Mosinee had its third penalty kick saved, Clintonville scored for the first time in the shootout. Colton Wiesman secured the win for Mosinee by connecting on the next penalty kick.

Mosinee’s Jake Haimerl made 25 saves to help Mosinee advance. Mosinee will travel to top-seeded Waupaca on Thursday.

WESTON - The Evergreens earned a Division 1 regional title by knocking off the Old Abes.

D.C. Everest will face Wisconsin Valley Conference foe SPASH on Thursday.

ASHWAUBENON - The Jaguars shut out the Lumberjacks to earn a Division 1 regional title over the Lumberjacks.

Top-seeded Ashwaubenon will travel to second-seeded Marshfield.

Vaughn also had a team-best 15 kills for the Cardinals in the 25-8, 25-9, 25-15 win. Julianne Barkholz had a team-high nine digs, while Vaughn added eight.

Mariah Whalen added 12 kills and a team-high eight aces.

WESTON - The Evergreens captured a regional title with the sweep over eighth-seeded Hudson.

The Evergreens advanced to Thursday’s sectional semifinal with the 25-10, 25-12, 25-21 win.

ATHENS – The top-seeded Bluejays advanced to a sectional semifinals with the 25-22, 25-13, 25-18 sweep of their Marawood Conference North Division opponent Falcons.

Athens will face the winner of the No. 1 Stratford vs. No. 2 Marathon matchup.

WITTENBERG - The Chargers moved into the sectional semifinals with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 victory over Shiocton in the regional final.

RIVER FALLS - Paige Brandenburg led the No. 7 Warriors with 14 kills in their losing effort against the second-seeded Wildcats in the Division 1 regional.

The Wildcats were in control for the majority of the match, winning 25-18, 17-25, 25-15, 25-12.

Ieden Sheehan registered 13 digs, while Caitlin Deaton added 10 kills in the loss. The Warriors conclude their season with an 18-19 record.

MERRILL - The No.1 Bluejays are headed to sectionals after withstanding a five-game meeting with the No.2 Raiders.

The ‘Jays took the back and forth match, winning 20-25, 25-19, 25-19,13-25, 15-9. The Raiders conclude their season 36-7, as Raiders coach Dave Vaara closes out his coaching career.

WISCONSIN RAPIDS - Kevin Sandoval rushed for 144 yards and four touchdowns as the Evergreens rallied back from a nine-point deficit in the second half to win the Division 1, Level 1 matchup.

Riley Peterson went 12-for-20 for 239 yards and two touchdown passes to Dylan Ellenbecker for the Evergreens (6-4), who travel to Bay Port for a Level 2 matchup. The Evergreens rolled up 493 yards off offense in the win. Everest’s defense allowed 453 yards but also forced four turnovers, including three interceptions.

Benjamin Olson went 12-for-17 for 181 yards and two touchdown passes for Rapids. Isaac Pelot rushed for 196 yards for the Raiders.

DIVISION 3 SECTIONAL

RIB MOUNTAIN - Edgar freshman Marisaa Ellenbecker won the girls race in a 18 minutes, 33 seconds at Nine Mile and was an individual qualifier for next week’s WIAA state meet.

Ellenbecker’s teammate, Hannah Brewster, finished seventh overall in 20:28 and was an individual qualifier as well along with Marathon’s Anna Buchberger. Buchberger placed third overall in 19:51.

Pacelli won the team title and qualified for state along with second-place Auburndale. Athens’ Josh Langteau finished second overall in the boys race in 16:25 and is an state individual qualifier.

Assumption won the boys team title and advanced to the state meet as did second-place Stratford. The Royals’ Connor Dolan won the race in 16:11.
