Central Wisconsin Storm wins tournament championship

MOSINEE - Katelyn Ramthun, Katelynn Schilling and Maggie Plaza all had a goal and an assist as the Central Wisconsin Storm downed Hayward 5-2 in the title game of the Gobbler Cup tournament Saturday afternoon.

Jamie Henrickson added two assists as the No. 2 Storm handed top-ranked Hayward, the defending state champions, its first loss of the season.

Chloe Westberg had 16 saves as the Storm improved to 4-0.

EAU CLAIRE - Christian Bardarson and Josh Bohlin both scored twice as the Warriors won the championship game in the Red Flint Rock and Stone Meltdown tournament.

The top-ranked Warriors finished with 54 shots on net against No. 2 Memorial.

Jacob Warnke stopped 23 shots for West and also picked up an assist on Bohlin’s goal in the first period.

West hosts SPASH in a Wisconsin Valley Conference opener Thursday at Marathon Park.

WAUSAU - The Warriors earned a second consecutive win at the Wausau Classic, this time taking care of the Cardinals behind Jakob Tordsen’s 25-point game.

Wausau West also got big scoring games from Tommy Borta and Mitch Michalske, who provided 23 and 15 points, respectively.

Newman Catholic was led by Braxton Resch’s 33 points, including five 3-pointers. Ben Bates added 15 points.

WAUSAU - Thomas Dunbar and Sawyer Schlindwein combined for 43 points to lead the Lumberjacks to a convincing win over Shawano at the Wausau Classic.

Dunbar led the team with 22 points while Schlindwein added 21 points and a pair of 3-pointers. As a team, Wausau East hit six 3-pointers and made 21 of 27 free throws.

Matt Tuman added 16 points with Chris Nash providing 11 points. The Lumberjacks led 43-26 at the half.

“We had a really good first half where we knocked down some open shots to open up a halftime lead,” Wausau East coach Paul Dimka said. “We played well in the second half and did some nice things to put us at 2-1 for the season.”

WISCONSIN DELLS - Merrill picked up a nonconference win over Menasha at JustAGame Fieldhouse.

It was Merrill’s second consecutive win at the JustAGame Fieldhouse, as the Bluejays picked up a 77-71 overtime victory over Randolph on Friday.

Merrill will host Shawano on Friday at 7:15 p.m. in its next game.

RHINELANDER - Signe Fronek scored 23 points and went seven of 10 from the free throw line to help Newman Catholic earn a tight win over Crandon at the Tom Kinslow Memorial Tournament.

Julia Seidel contributed 13 points while Lauren Fech added eight points.

Newman Catholic improved to 3-0 on the season after winning both games at the tournament. The Cardinals will look to remain unbeaten when it hosts Abbotsford on Monday.

RHINELANDER - Maddie Schires scored 15 points, recorded nine assists and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Warriors to a win over the Red Robins at the Tom Kinslow Memorial Tournament.

Shelby Samz added 15 points while Caitlin Deaton chipped in 11 points. Tess Hauer grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

“The girls are playing extremely hard for each other,” Wausau West coach Jason Teske said. “It has been fun to watch them compete as hard as they are competing.”

The Warriors are back in action Tuesday night when they host Rhinelander.

BROOKFIELD - Ashley Hodell made a layup with 23 seconds left to lift the Evergreens to a thrilling victory over the Bulldogs at the Brookfield Central Thanksgiving Tournament.

Cedarburg led 18-17 at halftime. D.C. Everest improved to 3-0 on the season and will take its perfect record into a Tuesday matchup with Baraboo.

RHINELANDER - Gracie Reineking scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds during the Lumberjacks nonconference loss to the Hodags.

Malaya Merriwether chipped in with 13 points for East and Jordan Murphy had eight rebounds.
