Local swimmers punch tickets to state

HUDSON - Julia Stupar won two events and and was part of a winning relay at the Division 1 girls swimming sectional at Hudson Saturday afternoon.

Stupar, a junior swimming for Stevens Point Area Senior High, won the 100-yard freestyle in 52.61 seconds and the 200 freestyle in 1:54.05. She joined teammates Kennedy Gilbertson, Alli Scharbarth and Casey Summers on the winning 200 freestyle relay team in 1:39.19.

The state tournament is next Friday and Saturday at the UW Natatorium.

Gilbertson also won the 100 backstroke (59.64) and Alex Raczek the 500 freestyle (5:24.94).

The D.C Everest 200 medley relay team of Madalyn Peterson, Jordan Tatro, Riyah Rudeen and Emma VanErmen won the event in 1:50.76. Tatro also was an individual state qualifier in the 100 butterfly in 57.4.

Wisconsin Rapids’ Grace Hartman won the 50 freestyle in 25 seconds flat to punch her trip to state.

The best times that weren’t sectional winning times in all events have a chance to be special qualifiers.

Stevens Point sectional

STEVENS POINT - Freshman Kylee Theiler won two individual events and was on a winning relay helping Tomahawk win the Stevens Point sectional with 307 points.

Theiler won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.65 and the 500 in 5:22.41.

Tomahawk’s winning relay was the 400 freestyle team of Theiler, Katy Volz, Megan Marcks and Rachel Dallman in 3:42.85.

ST. PETER, Minn. - The UW-Stevens Point men’s swimming team earned a nonconference road win over Gustavus Adolphus, placing first in 12 of 16 events.

Ethan Bott won the 100 and 200 backstroke while competing on the winning 200 medley relay team for the Pointers. Sam Jekel was on the winning 200 medley relay team while also placing first in the 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly.

Jack Englehardt took part in the 200 medley relay, while also winning the 50 freestyle and taking second in the 100 breaststroke. Jacob Aegerter won the 200 butterfly and 200 IM.

ST. PETER, Minn. - The UW-Stevens Point women’s swim team placed third while competing against Minnesota State and Gustavus Adolphus.

UWSP’s Bree Parent finished second in the 200 breaststroke while Erica Perkins took third in the 200 IM. Katelyn Homeyer, a Medford native, placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.

Jackie Braun placed first in the 3-meter dives while taking second in the 1-meter dives.

BLAINE, Minn. - Jacob Barber scored a pair of goals to lead the No. 1 ranked UW-Stevens Point men’s hockey team to a road win over Bethel University.

Barber opened the scoring with a goal at the 11:42 mark of the first period. Freshman Baxter Kanter added another first period goal to push the Pointers lead to two.

UWSP saw its lead double in the second period after goals from Kyle Sharkey and Barber. Bethel trimmed the deficit back down to three with a power-play goal at the 18:05 mark.

The Pointers responded, as Nathan Harris scored UWSP’s final goal just 40 seconds into the final period. Bethel added a late goal to cap the scoring in the game.

UWSP’s Jesse Gordichuk recorded 20 saves to earn the win. The Pointers forced Bethel goalie Jesse Garcia to make 51 saves.

The 3-0-1 Pointers will battle Concordia College and Saint John’s University next Friday and Saturday at K.B. Willett Ice Arena on Parents Weekend.

Concordia College 3 (OT)

MOORHEAD, Minn. - The UW-Stevens Point women’s hockey team settled for a tie with Concordia College at Moorhead Sports Center, scoring a third period goal to avoid the loss.

Ali Biagini scored a goal in the first and second period to push the Pointers out to a 2-0 lead. The Cobbers responded with three straight goals to surge ahead heading into the third period.

UWSP’s Cara Lemirande scored at the 3:01 mark to tie the game at 3-3 and ultimately force an overtime that neither team could capitalize in.

Sydney Conley made 16 saves for the Pointers as the team now owns a 1-2-1 record overall. UWSP will travel to St. Peter, Minn., to battle Gustavus Adolphus College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

WRESTLING

Pointer Open

STEVENS POINT - Reigning national champion Logan Hermsen highlighted the UW-Stevens Point wrestling team’s performance at the Pointer Open.

Hermsen, an Amherst graduate, recorded four wins in the 165-pound weight class before dropping a 5-3 decision to take second place. Sophomore Donny Ralston recorded four victories in the 285 weight class to place fourth.

A trio of Pointers had multiple wins in the 184 weight class. Freshman Carlito Shiro placed third with three wins while teammate James Borgen, another Amherst graduate, also had three victories en route to a fifth place finish. Ben Stassin had a pair of wins in the bracket.

Freshman Frank Lor, a Wausau native, had a pair of wins by fall and placed fourth for UWSP in the 141 weight class. Sophomore Moziah Clark picked up three wins at 125 to place sixth.

Junior Dylan Diebitz won a pair of wrestles to place fourth. He picked up a major decision in the opening matchup, but fell by a 6-4 decision in the third-place wrestle.

In the 157 weight class, Steve Collins, Tanner Goddard and Boone Roycraft each picked up a pair of wins for the Pointers.

WAUSAU - Danny Baratka poured in 32 points to lead UW-Marathon past UW-Washington in each team’s season openers.

Reese Chandler and Treven Gorst each provided 10 points. The Huskies hit 10 3-pointers in the win.

After trailing by a point at half, UW-Marathon outscored UW-Washington 46-36 in the second half to pull away.
