Fall athletes earn Great Northern honors

Medford's Conrad Bolz led the Great Northern Conference in rushing yards and touchdowns this season

WAUSAU – Two Medford players earned the top honors for the all-Great Northern Conference football team this fall.

The Raiders’ Conrad Bolz and Josh Thiede were selected as the conference’s offensive and defensive players of the year, respectively.

Antigo’s Tom Schofield was named the coach of the year. Medford, Antigo and Merrill tied for the conference championship with a 5-1 mark in Great Northern play.

Bolz led the conference in rushing as he aveaged 161.5 yards per game. He also rushed for a GNC-high 12 touchdowns in six conference games.

Thiede, a senior linebacker, was a key element of a Medford defense which was the top-ranked group in the Great Northern. Medford allowed an average of 200.2 yards per game in conference play. He also was a first team selection at running back.

Bolz and Thiede were among the seven unanimous selections to the all-GNC football team. The list also includes Antigo’s Mitchell Schroepfer (offensive line), Merrill’s Jon Gruetzmacher (offensive line), Mosinee’s Jose Mohr (offensive line), Rhinelander’s Gunnar Millot (kicker) and Tyler Bloomdahl (defensive line) and Antigo’s Hunter Cornelius (linebacker).

The offensive first team also includes Medford’s Alec Shear and Garrett Strebig, Rhinelander’s Matthew Reinthaler, Ashland’s Dakota Craig, Lakeland’s Jake Rexroade, Merrill’s Zach Mootz and Mosinee’s Parker Samples.

Samples and Strebig were also first team selections on defense. The list also includes Medford’s Brady Loertscher, Kolten Hason and Jake Sullivan. Merrill’s Noah Bolling, Braeden Dorn, Ben Tabor and Josiah Nohr, Mosinee’s Oliver Barnes and Lakeland’s Beau Ertl.

VOLLEYBALL

Northland Pines swept the postseason honors for the all-GNC volleyball team. Lexi Smith was selected the player of the year while Julie Smith earned the top coach nod.

Smith led the conference in hitting percentage (.398) and kills (5.9 per set). She is one of four unanimous selections to the all-GNC team. The group includes Medford seniors Victoria Lammar and Sophia Pernsteiner and Antigo’s Billie Novak.

Medford went undefeated in conference play and the Raiders libero Maggie Baker was a first team all-conference selection as well.

Mosinee sophomore and Rhinelander junior Hope Wissbroecker were first team selections as well.

Medford’s Osy Ekwueme and Rhinelander’s Gunnar Millot were selected as the co-offensive players of the year, and Northland Pines’ Scott Young earned the top defensive player honor.

Ekwueme led the Great Northern in goals (19) and points (45), and Millot was first in assists (17) and points (39).

Ekwueme was one of five unanimous picks for the all-conference team. The group also inclues. Mosinee’s Kirill Romashov and Cody Jay, Northland Pines Davey Mendham and Rhinelander’s Jonus Saboni.

The first team also inclues Millott, Young, Mosinee’s Jake Haimerl and Colton Wiesman and Lakeland’s Kieran and Kyle Wuestenhagen.

Lakeland’s Elodie Martin was selected as the singles player of the year, and Medford’s Rylee Anderson and Emily Shipman were the top doubles team.

Rhinelander’s Bob Heideman received the top coach honor.

The first team singles players also included Rhinelander’s Kristina Jacobson and Belinda Weddle and Lakeland’s Morgan Ahrens.

The first team doubles teams also included Antigo’s Abby Robrecht/Taylor Arrowood and Rhinelander’s Livi Roberts/Haley Seefeldt.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Ladysmith/Bruce/Flambeau’s Whitney Fuse was the swimmer of the year.

Tomahawk, the GNC champions, had four first team individuals: Katy Volz (100 yard butterfly), Rachel Dallman (100 free), Kaylie Svacina (200 free) and Kylee Theiler (400 free).

Tomahawk’s 200 medley relay also earned first-team all conference honors. The team consisted of Volz, Megan Marcks, Kirstin Marcks and Shelby Benaszeski.

CROSS COUNTRY

Lakeland’s Kavanaugh FitzPatrick and Rhinelander’s Alayna Franson were named the boys and girls runners of the year, respectively.

Medford’s Trey Ulrich and Derek Rudolph both earned first team all-conference honors for boys cross country.

Medford’s Franny Seidel and Tomahawk’s Haley Voermans-Dean earned the honor for the girl team.
