Columbus Catholic beats Marathon to stay perfect

MARATHON - Columbus Catholic seniors Hunter Schultz and Tyler Fuerlinger generally are the players that opposing teams focus on shutting down.

Marathon's Bryce Seuber battles for a rebound with Columbus Catholic’s Nick Hutchison( during Tuesday night nonconference boys basketball game match at Marathon High School.

But junior Nick Malovhr demonstrated again Tuesday that he is a very capable scoring threat for the Dons’ boys basketball team as well.

Malovhr scored 20 of his game-high 30 points in the first half to help the Dons to a 88-68 nonconference win over Marathon. The Columbus Catholic guard has been the team’s third-leading scorer this season, averaging 10.5 points per game, but finished with eight of the Dons’ 15 3-pointers.

“He’s had two of three (games) like that before,” Dons’ coach Joe Konieczny said of Malovrh, whose previous season high was 22 points against Owen-Withee. “He’s got the potential to score a lot of points fast. I always tell people his biggest downfall is he got stuck in a class behind Tyler and Hunter. If those two guys weren’t with us he would score a lot more, but he definitely is a big threat for us.”

Schultz and Fuerlinger added 28 and 20 points, respectively, as the Dons improved to 9-0 overall. The two seniors combined for 35 of the Dons’ 50 points in the second half.

“Whether we are in zone or man-to-man (defense) we seem to react instead of dictate,” Marathon coach Adam Jacobson said. “We let them get into the middle of the floor way too much .. and when you face a team that is that good offensively and you are a step slow, it’s going to be a long night.”

Nathan Stoffel scored 24 points and Carter Hanke added 18 points to lead the Raiders (4-3).

The Dons, who are tied with Loyal for first place in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division, travels to Greenwood Thursday. Marathon hosts Stratford in a Marawood Conference South Division matchup Friday.

Malovrh had six of the Dons’ eight 3-pointers in the first half.

“We have a pretty good offense and work the ball around for open looks,” Malovrh said. “I was pretty open (tonight), I was feeling it and my team trusts me (with the shots).”

Malovhr gave the Dons the lead for good at 8-6 with a 3-pointer with 13 minutes, 39 seconds left in the half. The Dons led by as much as 15 points late in the half before the Raiders made a run. Marathon closed to within 35-26 in the final minute before Malovhr hit a 3-pointer just before time expired.

Fuerlinger and Schultz then hit 3-pointers in the opening 30 seconds of the second half to give the Dons a 44-26 cushion.

Marathon never got closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

“That was huge,” Konieczny said. “The lead went from nine (points) to 16 in about 30 seconds. Tyler and Hunter both knocked (a shot) down and then Tyler hit another 3-pointer right after that. I don’t think you can do much defensively when you have three guys who can score and they are all kind of hot at the same time. We were fortunate to shoot the ball that well tonight.”
