Local programs make jump in AP poll

Amber Baehman and the Tri-County girls basketball team are ranked No. 7 in Division 5 in the latest Associated Press state basketball poll which was released Monday.

WAUSAU - Four local girls teams and two boys programs all had a minor move upward in the latest Associated Press state basketball poll.

The Marathon (12-2) and Wittenberg-Birnamwood (12-0) girls teams were ranked No. 8 and No. 9 in Division 4, in the state poll, which was released Monday afternoon. The move is an increase of one spot for each program from the previous week.

No. 7 Tri-County (13-0) and No. 9 Loyal (12-3)  also moved up a spot in Division 5 in the girls poll.

Edgar (10-1) moved up a spot in Division 4 to No. 9 in the boys poll, while Almond-Bancroft (9-2) moved up two spots to No. 8 in Division 5.

Ten local boys and girls teams were ranked in the state poll overall.

Stevens Point Area Senior High (11-1) and Columbus Catholic (12-0) were ranked No. 3 in Division 1 and 5, respectively, in the boys poll.

The Neillsville girls (12-1)  suffered its first loss of the season last Friday to Loyal and dropped three spots to No. 7 in Division 4.

Newman Catholic (11-4) dropped one spot to No. 10 in Division 5.

Three boys teams received votes in the state poll: Wausau East (Division 2) and both Loyal and Assumption in Division 5.

Amherst (Division 3) received votes in the girls poll.

Kimberly and Oshkosh North are the co-No. 1 teams for Division 1 in the boys poll. La iCrosse Central (Division 2), Ripon (Division 3), Destiny (Division 4) and Barneveld (Division 5) are also ranked No. 1.

Appleton North is the top-ranked team in Division 1 in the girls poll. Beaver Dam (Division 2) , Whitewater (Division 3), Aquinas (Division 4) and Clayton (Division 5) are also ranked No. 1.
