Four D.C. Everest wrestlers punch tickets to state

RIVER FALLS - Nathan White, Thomas Severson, Sam Stroik and Berkley Corvino all placed either first or second in their weight classes at the Division 1 River Falls Sectional to advance to the state wrestling meet.

The state tournament will be held from Thursday through Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

White (170) picked up two pins on his way to winning his weight class. Severson (126), Stroik (195) and Corvino (220) each earned second place finishes to advance to state.

The top two wrestlers at each weight class earned a trip to state.

SPASH’s Justin Groshek, Brady Koontz and Dylan Koontz will all wrestle at state after picking up first place finishes in their weight classes.

The SPASH trio racked up five wins by pin on the day. Groshek (106), a freshman, will make his first state appearance while Brady Koontz (113) and Dylan Koontz (120) will each try for a second straight state title.

Nolan Hertel (145) and Sam Mitchell (170) will represent Marshfield at state after second place finishes.

Merrill’s Devon Schultz (132) and Noah Bolling (285) and Wausau West’s Cameron Schmeiser (106) and Jordan LaRue (182) also will wrestle at state following second place finishes.

Wyler Lubeck (132) took first and was the lone Wisconsin Rapids’ wrestler to advance to state.

Amery Sectional

AMERY - Spencer/Columbus Catholic co-op’s Hunter Luepke and Logan Zschernitz each earned first place finishes at the Division 2 Amery Sectional to advance to state.

Luepke (195) and Zschernitz (285) each earned two pins on the day. Teammate Ashton Ackman (106) also will wrestle at state after a second place finish.

Medford’s Dane Higgins (113) claimed a first place finish to advance to state. Kolton Hanson (160) also advanced after finishing second.

The Neillsville/Greenwood/Loyal co-op will send Stephen Buchanan (170) and Nick Rueth (285) to state after first and second place finishes, respectively.

Sam Burzynski (152) took second while Dalton Smith (138) placed third to advance to state for the Stanley-Boyd/Owen-Withee co-op.

The Abbotsford/Colby co-op did not advance a wrestler to state.

Seymour Sectional

SEYMOUR - Jordan Sarver of Nekoosa/Assumption/Port Edwards will return to the state meet with a 40-4 record after recording a 7-2 decision over Wautoma/Wild Rose’s Tanner Deist in the title match at 132.

Josh Ehster (33-4) will represent Mosinee in Madison after placing third at 113.

He won his third-place match with Freedom’s Koy Murphy, 7-0, and then lost by injury default in the second-place match.

Antigo’s Benjamin Stimac (26-13) earned a spot at state after grabbing a third-place result at 126 with a 5-4 decision over Derick Bader of Wrightstown.

Stimac dropped his second-place match with Freedom’s Mitch Garvey in a fall in 2:53.

Adams-Friendship failed to advance any indivduals out of the Richland Center Sectional.

Bonduel Sectional

BONDUEL- Stratford won the sectional title by almost 100 points as ten wrestlers advance to individual state meet. The top three finishers at each weight qualified for state tournament

Manny Drexler (106), A.J. Schoenfuss (120), Jake Drexler (132), Jeremy Schoenherr (138), Mason Kauffman (152), David Marquardt (160), and Kamren Bornbach (220) were all crowned sectional champions in their respective weight classes.

Kade Ehrike (170), Aiden Hoffman (195), and Tyson Kauffman (285) also punched their ticket to Madison for the Tigers with third-place finishes.

Athen’s Austin Engel earned the sectional title at 145 as five Bluejays earned their spot to compete at the state tournament. Carter Brunke (113), and Nathaniel Morse (160) finished second, while Marshall Westfall (182) finished third to join Engel in Madison.

Amherst’s Bryce Holderman won the 182 title, while his teammate Max Villnow (220) finished second.

Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s Alex Peplinski won the 182 crown, while Stephan Potrykus (152) finished second.

Edgar’s Will Raatz (182) and Alex Lemanski (195) finished second.

Pittsville’s Matthew Grossman (120) and Tyler Dammann (138) qualified with third place finishes.

Tri-County’s lone qualifier was Brandon Peckham (152) as he finished third.

SHAWANO- Mosinee fell in nonconference play to the Hawks.

Mosinee dropped to 12-7, while Shawano improved to 11-9. Mosinee hosts Marshfield on Monday in another nonconference battle.

Merrill 46,

Ashland 45

ASHLAND- The Bluejays were able to edge out the Oredockers in a neck-and-neck nonconference battle.

Merrill improved to 12-8 with the win.

Jordan Brennan led the Oredockers with 23 points as Ashland fell to 7-13.

The Bluejays host Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday.

AUBURNDALE - Cooper Weinfurter, Cameron Ertl and Colton Wright each scored 10 points in a balanced attack to spark Auburndale past the Tigers in a Marawood Conference South Division contest.

Three other players finished with nine points for Auburndale, which built a 26-16 halftime lead and then held off the Tigers.

Jacob Danen paced Stratford with a game-high 15 points. Brenden Fecker and Vaughn Breit also broke into double figures.

ABBOTSFORD - The Raiders rolled to a win over the Buccaneers in the first place matchup of the Marawood Crossover.

Marathon finishes the regular season with an overall record of 18-3. The Raiders won the Marawood Conference South Division with a mark of 11-1.

The third-seeded Raiders will host either sixth-seeded Crivitz or 11th-seeded Spencer on Friday in a regional semifinal after receiving a bye.

Rib Lake 34

ABBOTSFORD - The Cardinals knocked off Rib Lake in a battle of the second place teams in their respective Marawood Conference divisions.

Newman Catholic, second place finishers in the Marawood Conference South Division, improved to 18-4 overall.

The Cardinals will host Greenwood on Tuesday in the first round of the WIAA Division 5 playoffs.

BOYS SWIMMING

WIAA Division 1 Championships

MADISON - Stevens Point Area Senior High freshman Ben Harris announced his arrival on the state swimming scene Saturday.

In her first appearance at the Division 1 individual state swimming and diving meet, Harris just missed out claiming a spot on the podium.

Harris turned in a time of 4 minutes, 50.31 seconds in the 500-yard freestyle to place 10th. The top six individuals in each event or relay make the podium.

SPASH senior Zach Dahlseng also competed in the 500 freestyle and he finished 22nd with a time 4:56.74. John Acevedo of Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial won the event in 4:30.12.

Dahlseng and Harris teamed up with senior Hunter Shulfer and Chad Franz, a sophomore, to place 15th in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:40.96.

The same quartet also grabbed a 16th-place showing in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:29.47 — the same exact finish they picked up in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:17.43.

SPASH finished with 15 points to tie with Racine Horlick for 25th place. Waukesha South/Catholic Memorial won the state championship with 246.

Wisconsin Rapids junior Dylan Engelbright placed 19th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.06 seconds.

WAUSAU- The Huskies advance to the WCC State Tournament at the JAG Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells on Saturday, February 25 with the win over the Marauders.

Austin Frick led the Huskies with 24 points, while Danny Baratka and Andy Yang scored 20 and 17, respectively.

Tyler Prust led the Marauders with 16 points, while Covon Rudolph and Joesph Estrict added 13 and 12, respectively.

ANTIGO- Mosinee improved to 5-7 in the Great Northern Conference and 9-13 overall win a win over their conference foe.

The Red Robins fell to 4-8 in the GNC and 7-13 overall.

Mosinee hosts Waupaca on Tuesday for the opening round of the regional tournament, while Antigo travels to Rhinelander.

Tomahawk 32

EAGLE RIVER- Lexi Smith led the Eagles with 35 points as they defeated Tomahawk in Great Northern Conference play.

Northland Pines improved to 7-5 in the GNC and 15-7 overall.

Tomahawk fell to 0-12 in conference play and 0-20 overall.

Both teams start tournament play on Tuesday as Tomahawk travels to Xavier and Northland Pines travels to Clintonville.

PHILLIPS- The Wildcats finished their regular season with a win over the Loggers in a Marawood Crossover game.

The Wildcats improved to 7-15. The Loggers finished the regular season at 6-15.

Both teams being tournament play on Tuesday as the Wildcats travel to Wild Rose and the Loggers travel to Unity.
