Marathon boys, girls both state ranked

WAUSAU - The Marathon boys and girls squads are both ranked in the latest Associated Press state basketball polls.

The Marathon girls (18-3) remained at No. 8 in the Division 4 poll. The Raiders boys team (16-4) is tied with Laconia for 10th in Division 4 after not being ranked the previous week.

The Marathon teams were among the 11 local boys and girls programs ranked in the poll which was released Monday. It is the final girls state poll of the season. The WIAA girls basketball postseason begins Tuesday with regional quarterfinal matchups.

Amherst (21-1) and Tri-County (21-1) are No. 5 in Divisions 3 and 5, respectively, and are the highest-ranked girls teams among the local programs in the poll.

Marathon is one of three girls teams ranked in Division 4 as Neillsville (20-2) and Wittenberg-Birnamwood (21-1) are ranked seventh and ninth, respectively.

Newman Catholic (18-4) remained No. 8 in Division 5 and Loyal fell out of the poll after being ranked 10th last week. The Greyhounds received votes as did D.C. Everest in Division 1.

Columbus Catholic (19-1) is No. 5 in Division 5 and the highest-ranked program in the boys poll. The Dons suffered their first loss of the season last week to Loyal and dropped three spots. Columbus Catholic is one spot ahead of Almond-Bancroft (18-2).

Edgar (17-4), the Marawood Conference North Division champions, remained No. 7 in Division 4.

Stevens Point Area Senior High (17-4) fell to Middleton in a nonconference game last week and dropped five spots to No. 9 in Division 1.

Loyal received votes in Division 5.

Oshkosh North (20-0) and La Crosse Central (18-2) were the unanimous No. 1 team for Division 1 and 2, respectively, in the boys poll.

Beaver Dam (Division 2) and Clayton (Division 5) were both unanimous No. 1 selection in the girls state poll.
