West trio highlights All-State boys hockey team

WAUSAU - Nick Techel and Cole Caufield were co-players of the year in the Wisconsin Valley Conference this winter, and both received another notable postseason award this week.

The two were both first-team selections to the Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association All-State boys hockey team. Techel, a senior forward for Wausau West, had 15 goals and 34 points this year. Caufield, a sophomore, had 50 goals and 79 points for Stevens Point Area Senior High.

The two are among six local players who were named to the first team as the All-State squad was released Wednesday. Techel is one of three West players in that group, joined by teammates Josh Bohlin and Kellen Tharaldson.

Bohlin, a junior forward, had 28 goals and 46 points for the Warriors, who reached the WIAA state semifinal, and Tharaldson, a senior defenseman, had 26 points.

Antigo had two first team selections. Senior forward Tyler Husnick had 11 goals and 47 points, and senior goalie Ben Bartletti finished with a 1.47 goals against average and a .931 save percentage.

Husnick was a finalist for the player of the year honor, which ultimately went to Waukesha's Ian Malcolmson.

Hudson's Brook Lockwood was the recipient of the Bob Johnson Memorial Coach of the Year award, and Antigo's Matt Borneman was named the top coach from Section 3. Wausau West's Matt Skogstad and Antigo's Brett Zelazoski were named the assistant coaches of the year from Section 3 and 5, respectively.

Antigo also was the academic state champions with a 3.80 team grade point average. SPASH had the top team GPA in Section 3.

Six local players were honorable mention picks, including Wausau West forward Christian Bardarson and defeseman Jacob Evans. D.C. Everest also had two selections with defenseman JJ Berdal and goalie Michael Janke.

Antigo forward Adam Schmidt and SPASH goalie Phil Trzebiatowski were also honorable mention selections.

GIRLS HOCKEY

The Wisconsin Girls Hockey Coaches Association  All-State team was announced during the WIAA state tournament earlier this month and two local players were named to the first team: Central Wisconsin Storm forward Katelyn Ramthun and Lakeland/Tomahawk/Mercer goalie Erin Sparks.

Central Wisconsin Storm forward Katelyn Ramthun,left, had 45 points this season for the Central Wisconsin Storm.

Ramthun had 23 goals and 45 points as the Storm won the state title. Sparks finished with a 1.67 goals against average and a .945 save percentage.

Hayward goalie Lauren Tremblay was named the player of the year.

Central Wisconsin Storm defenseman Taylor Treu was a second-team All-State selection and three local players were honorable mention selections.

Central Wisconsin Storm forwards Maggie Plaza and Katelynn Schilling were both honorable mention picks along with Point/Rapids/Marshfield defenseman AJ Weiss.
