SPASH tandem leads local WBCA selections

USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin
Stevens Point Area Senior High's Joey Hauser, left, and Drew Blair celebrate a win over Oshkosh North in a WIAA Division 1 sectional final earlier this month. Hauser and Blair were both first team All-State selections by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association.

WAUSAU - A high-ankle sprain sidelined Joey Hauser for the first 11 games of the prep boys basketball season.

But when the Stevens Point Area Senior High junior returned to the court, little seemed to slow him or the Panthers down.

Hauser, a 6-foot-8 post player, averaged 23.6 points, 11.5 rebounds and 5.1 assists for the Panthers over the final half of the season. He had 33 points and 21 rebounds and four assists as SPASH rolled to a win over Arrowhead in the WIAA Division 1 state championship game for the Panthers' third straight title.

On Monday, two days after that performance, Hauser was a unanimous All-State selection by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association. Terrence Lewis, of Milwaukee Riverside, was the only other Division 1 player to be a unanimous selection to the team.

Hauser’s junior teammate, Drew Blair, was a first team All-State selection as well. Blair averaged 19.2 points and 4.5 rebounds this season for the Panthers.

The SPASH standouts were the co-players of the year in the Wisconsin Valley Conference and are among five local players named first team All-State by the WBCA. Three other players were honorable mention selections.

Columbus Catholic High School's Tyler Fuerlinger, left, was the player of the year in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division this season as he helped the Dons reach the WIAA state boys basketball tournament.

Columbus Catholic’s Tyler Fuerlinger and Hunter Schultz were both first-team selections in Division 5 following a season in which they helped the Dons reach the state tournament for the first time since 2003. Fuerlinger, the player of the year in the Cloverbelt Conference East Division, averaged 22.7 points, 7.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists.

Columbus Catholic High School’s Hunter Schultz (24) drives to the basket through a group of Barneveld High School defenders in a WIAA Division 5 boys basketball semifinal game last week at the Kohl Center.

Schultz, a senior point guard, averaged 23.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.2 assists as the Dons posted a 25-3 record and reached the state semifinals.

Columbus Catholic defeated Almond-Bancroft in the sectional semifinals and the Eagles’ Dylan Bunders was an All-State pick in Division 5 as well.
