Wisconsin Valley names top winter athletes

Marshfield senior Ema Fehrenbach capped her prep career by being named the Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball player of  the year this winter.

MARSHFIELD -  Marshfield senior Ema Fehrenbach capped her prep career with a second straight unanimous selection to the all-Wisconsin Valley Conference girls basketball team, and also claimed her first player of the year honor.

The Tigers' standout tied for first in conference in rebounding (83 total, 6.9 rebounds per game) and finished second in scoring at 16.9 points per game.

Caitlin Deaton earned her second all-WVC first team selection as well. The Wausau West senior averaged 13.9 points per game, fourth highest average in conference. Deaton's teammate Maddie Schires joined her on the first team as the sophomore was a unanimous choice for the honor. Schires led the conference in scoring with 238 total points (19.8 ppg) as well as 3-pointer percentage on 35 of 71 attempts (49.3 percent ) and free throw percentage on 57-for-62 (91.9 percent).

Conference champion D.C. Everest placed two players on the first team, juniors Taylor Petit and Natalie Mohring. Petit, a unanimous selection, led the conference in assists with 61 (5.5 per game) and finished fourth in scoring (17.3 ppg). Mohring finished third in rebounding (77 total, 6.4 rpg) and fifth in scoring (12.5 ppg).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Stevens Point Area Senior High's Drew Blair and Joey Hauser were named the co-players of the year for the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

The junior duo led SPASH to an undefeated conference season and a third straight WIAA Division 1 state title. Blair averaged 19.2 points per game, while Hauser averaged 22.8 points per game in the WVC.. Hauser also averaged a league-high 10 rebounds per game and a conference-leading 5.6 assists per game.

This was the Hauser’s second unanimous selection to the all-WVC first team.

Joining them on the first team as unanimous selections were Sawyer Schlindwein and Jakob Tordsen.

Schlindwein, a senior at Wausau East, finished fourth in conference scoring with 17.6 points per game and led the WVC in rebounds with 8.4 per game.

Tordsen averaged 12.3 points per game for Wausau West as the senior led the conference in assists with 54 assists (4.5 per game) and was third in rebounds with 73 total (6.1 rpg). This was Tordsen's second first team selection.

Marshfield senior Alec Hinson and Merrill junior Zach Mootz completed the all-WVC first team.

Hinson led the conference from the line as he hit 39 of 41 free-throw attempts this season to earn his second first-team selection.

Mootz led the conference in shooting percentage from beyond the arc as he connected on 28 of 59 attempts for a .475 3-point field goal percentage, while finishing third overall for most points scored (216, 18.0 ppg).

BOYS HOCKEY

Nick Techel and Cole Caufield both earned their second all-Wisconsin Valley Conference boys hockey first team selection as the two were named players of the year as well.

Techel, a senior at Wausau West, had nine goals and six assists in conference play. He also led the conference in short-handed goals with four.

Caufield, a sophomore for SPASH, led the conference in scoring with 24 goals and 13 assists to finish with 37 points.

Joining Caufield on the first team was Panthers teammate Phil Trzebiatowski. Trzebiatowski made 139 saves while only giving up 10 goals in six games for a 1.73 goals-against average and a .933 save percentage. The duo led SPASH to a share of the conference title with Wausau West

West's Josh Bohlin and Kellen Tharaldson were also selected to the first team. Bohlin led the conference in power-play goals from the forward position as he had five on the season. The junior finished second in scoring with 25 points as he had 17 goals and eight assists.

Tharaldson, a senior defenseman, had four goals and eight assists.

D.C. Everest’s J.J. Berdal was named to the first team as well. The junior defenseman finished fourth in scoring with 17 points on eight goals and nine assists.

BOYS SWIMMING

Ian Beaten earned all-Wisconsin Valley Conference swimmer of the year honors. The senior led D.C. Everest to a second-place finish at the WVC conference meet as he finished third in the 50-yard free, fourth in the 100 free, and was part of the second-place 200 medley and 400 free relays.

SPASH’s Zach Dahlseng earned four first-team awards, while Drew Harris and Hunter Shulfer garnered first-team honors in three events and Chad Franz picked up two.

Wisconsin Rapids junior Dylan Engelbright picked up three first-team nods, while D.C. Everest’s Payton Rudeen earned two first-team awards.
