All-Marawood winter teams announced

Assumption junior Joe Grundhoffer averaged double figures in both points and rebounds in the Marawood Conference South Division this winter.

WISCONSIN  RAPIDS - The Assumption boys basketball team earned a share of the Marawood Conference South Division title this year, and Joe Grundhoffer was a pivotal reason for the Royals success.

The junior averaged a double-double in conference play with 17.5 points per game and a Marawood South-best 10.75 rebounds per game. For his performance he was named the conference player of the year

Grundhoffer's teammate,Trevor Newton, a Royals senior,  and Marathon’s junior Donavon Free were named to the all-Marawood South first team as well. Newton led the conference in assists (69), while Free was fourth in scoring (15.58 ppg).

Assumption and Marathon tied for the conference title with a 10-2 mark in Marawood South play.

Caleb Weinfurter was a unanimous selection to the South Division team. The Auburndale senior was led the conference in free throw percentage (85.7 percent) and was second in assists (47).

Matthew Carlson also was a unanimous selection to the all-Marawood South team. The senior led Pittsville with 14.67 points and 6.75 rebounds per game.

Prentice senior Drew Rohde was a unanimous selection and the Marawood North boys basketball player of the year as well as he led the conference in scoring (21.58 ppg) and was third in rebounding (7.92 rpg).

Edgar had two players named to the first team. Senior Alec Hafferman was a unanimous selection for the second straight year as he led the conference champion Wildcats in scoring (12.42 ppg), His teammate, Tyler Engel, led the conference in assists with 53.

Cade Rose was a unanimous selection to the all-Marawood North team for the second straight year and a first team selection for the third time. The Phillips senior led the conference in rebounds with 122 and was fourth in scoring. He was the lone player to average a double-double in conference action this season (13.83 ppg and 10.17 rpg).

Christian Armstrong was named to the all-Marawood North first team for the first time. The Chequamegon senior was second in conference scoring with 20.08 ppg.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Newman Catholic's Lauren Fech, who was selected to the second team last year, was named the player of the year. The Cardinals standout was second in conference scoring (13.0 ppg) behind junior teammate and fellow first-team honoree Signe Fronek (13.83 ppg).

Amanda Kind was a unanimous selection as the senior led conference-champion Marathon in rebounds with 7.0 per game, third best in conference, while averaging 10.25 ppg.

Stratford had two unanimous selections to the all-Marawood North team with seniors Andie Zuelke and Sammy Griesbach. Zuelke led the conference in rebounds (8.25 rpg), while Griesbach led in assists (57). Zuelke was fourth conference scoring with 12.42 ppg.

Edgar's Macey Wirkus earned her third straight all-Marawood North first team selection, while Prentice's Caelyn Ulrich and Rib Lake's Katie Cardey both picked up their second. The three girls, along with Athens' Kenadi Diedrich, were all unanimous selections this year.

Cardey, who was an unanimous selection last year as well, was named the Marawood North player of the year. The Rib Lake senior led the conference in scoring (17.83 ppg).

Ulrich, a junior at Prentice, led the conference in steals with 61. Wirkus, a senior at Edgar, led the conference in shooting percentage (60 percent) and rebounding (8.92 rpg).

Abbotsford senior Sadie Gundersonand junior Dylana Schreiner earned first team honors as well. Gunderson led the conference in assists (50), while Schreiner’s team-high 14.67 ppg was fourth-best in conference.
