CLINTONVILLE - The Mosinee baseball team is heading to state for the first time in nearly three decades.

Ben Vandehey combined with two relievers on a two-hitter as Mosinee downed Luxemburg-Casco 5-0 in a WIAA Division 2 sectional championship game Tuesday afternoon.

Vandehey also had a double and three RBI as Mosinee won its first sectional championship since 1991.

Mosinee faces Waupaca in a state semifinal matchup Wednesday night at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute.

"It was a great day and just an all-around team effort," Mosinee coach Adam Olson said.

Mosinee had lost in the sectional semifinal round the past four years but cleared that hurdle with a 9-3 win over Seymour in the first game Tuesday. Vandehey went 3-for-3 with four RBI in the win over Seymour.

Seymour scored three runs in the fourth inning in the semifinal to close to within 4-3, but Mosinee scored three times in bottom half of the inning to build a four-run cushion again.

Mosinee added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings and finished with 15 hits in the win. Jace Baumann pitched four innings for the win. Dominick Colleo threw the final three innings.

Mosinee scored three times in the first inning of the championship game and added a run in the fifth and sixth innings.
