Great Northern Conference spring athletes honored

Jace Baumann was one of two Mosinee players named first team on the all-Great Northern Conference basebal squad this spring.

WAUSAU - Rachel Dallman's junior season with the Tomahawk softball team was a dominant one.

Dallman, Tomahawk's No. 1 starting pitcher, led the Great Northern Conference in both wins (eight) and strikeouts (97) and helped her team to a second-place finish in the conference standings.

Dallman also had a .303 batting average in conference play and for her performance was selected as the GNC softball player of the year. It's among the honors for GNC athletes as the all-conference teams for spring sports was recently released.

Dallman was joined by teammate Courtney Theiler among the 12 players named first team on the all-GNC softball squad, and Tomahawk's John Larson was selected as the top coach. Dallman was also one of five unanimous selections to the team.

Antigo's Allison Kondzela, Medford's Victoria Lammar and Mosinee's Mckayla Garski were all unanimous selections as well along with Rhinelander's Makayla Kuester. 

Kondzela was one of four Antigo players named to the first team as she was joined by teammates Abi Fleischman, Laurissa Belot and Alivia Weix. 

Mosinee, the conference champions, had three first-team selections as Brooke Wierzbanowski and Jaycie Dulak also received the honor. 

Rhinelander's Ivy Packard was named to the first team as well. 

BASEBALL

Antigo's Austin Kirsch, who led the conference with a .553 batting average, was named the Great Northern Conference player of the year. 

Kirsch was one of Antigo's four players who first team selection to the all-conference team in a spring season in which the Red Robins won the GNC title. Antigo's Scott Farmer was selected as the top coach. 

Kirsch was a unanimous selection as a infielder and also voted to the first team as a pitcher as well. Teammate Matt Winter was a unanimous pick and fellow Antigo outfielder Matt Arndt was a first team selection as well. Catcher Garret Held rounds out Antigo's first-team honorees. 

Mosinee's Ben Vandehey was a unanimous selection as an infielder and one of two first team selections for a team which reached the WIAA Division 2 state semifinals. Jace Baumann was named to the first team as well as a utility player.

Rhinelander had two unanimous selections in pitcher Brad Comer and outfielder Brad Quade. The Hodags' Easton Senorske and Jacob Demeyer were named to the first team at infield and utility, respectively. 

Medford infielder Trenton Woebbeking was selected to first team as well. 

GIRLS SOCCER

Rhinelander had four of the 11 players named first team all-conference, including GNC offensive player of the year Alayna Franson. 

Franson, a junior, led the conference with 23 points and 72 goals and helped the Hodags to a 14-0 record in GNC play. 

Rhinelander seniors Sydney Zettler nd Albiona Sabini were named to the first team along with junior Anna Sturzl.

Three players were unanimous selections to the all-conference team —Ashland's Sasha Voldberg, Lakeland's Sydney Ziebart and Northland Pines Lexi Smith. 

Smith was one of three Northland Pines players named to the first team as Hadley Kruse and Anna Hartwig. Kruse, a junior, was selected as the GNC's defensive player of the year as well. 

Newman Catholic senior Kate David was a first team selection as was Ashland junior Kaylee McPeak. 

OTHER SPORTS

Antigo's Tyler Husnick was selected as the top singles boys tennis player in the GNC this spring, while the Red Robins' Ben Bartletti and Drew Schwarz were honored as the top doubles team.

Medford's Spenser Scholl earned the honor as the top boys golfer in the GNC this season and the Raiders' Dave Vaara received the coach of the year nod. 

Lakeland's Kavanaugh FitzPatrick and Northland Pines' Gabrielle Herfindahl were selected as the GNC's boys and girls runner of the year for the conference track season. 

Medford's Osy Ekwueme and Mosinee's Kiana Pugh were the boys and girls field athletes of the year, respectively. 

Lakeland's Kevin Fitzpatrick received both the boys and girls track coach of the year honor.
