9 Wausau-area baseball players named to all-state team

WAUSAU - Two local prep baseball players were recently recognized as among the best in the state this spring.

Mosinee’s Jace Baumann and Wausau West’s Payton Nelson were both first-team selections to the Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association all-state team, which was released late last week.

Baumann was selected as an infielder. He had a .506 batting average this season as he helped Mosinee to the WIAA Division 2 state semifinals in the program’s first state tournament appearance since 1991.

Nelson, an outfielder who was a third team all-state selection last year, had a .461 batting average for Wausau West this spring. He also was selected as the Division 1 player of the year for the District 2 area of the state, which covers prep baseball programs in the north central portion of Wisconsin.

Baumann and Nelson are among nine local players who were named to the all-state first, second or third teams, or were honorable mention selections.Antigo's Tom Weixalso was honored as the assistant coach of the year from the District 2 area.

Nelson is one of three players selected from a West team which won the Wisconsin Valley Conference title for the first time since 2011. West infielder Logan Grunenwald and utility player Chandler Fochs were both third-team selections and had a .417 and .415 batting average, respectively. Fochs also had a 5-0 record and a 2.13 earned run average as a pitcher.

Gus Turner-Zick was the fourth Wisconsin Valley Conference player named to the all-state team. The outfielder had a .427 batting average this spring for a Stevens Point Area Senior High team which finished second to West in the conference standings.

Almond-Bancroft, which won the Central Wisconsin Conference-10 title, had two players honored. Eagles junior catcher Derek Baumgartner was a third-team selection as he had a .557 batting average this spring. His teammate, junior Alex Wiczek, was a honorable mention selection. Wiczek posted a 9-0 record and a 1.15 ERA for the Eagles.

Baumgarter was named the Division 4 player of the year for the District 2 area as well.

Wiczek was one of three local players to be named honorable mention. Marshall Westfall, had a .400 batting average for the Division 4 state champion Athens team. Stratford infielder Cole Hoffman had a .516 batting average for the Tigers.

Westfall’s teammate, Jake Stange, is one of 11 local players to be named to the all-state academic team. The group includes Turner-Zick and SPASH teammate Joe Strigel, Auburndale’s Logan Wilfahrt, Antigo’s Matt Winter and Cody Urban, D.C. Everest’s John Breske, Columbus Catholic’s Tyler Fuerlinger, Neillsville’s Logan Matson and Pacelli’s Andy Tepp and Jake Thomas
