Top Marawood Conference baseball, softball players honored
WAUSAU - Two members of the state champion Athens baseball team were honored as among the best players in the Marawood Conference this spring.
Junior Marshall Westfall and sophomore Seth Coker were both unanimous selections to the all-Marawood North Division team, and are among the number of local players who were named to all-conference baseball or softball squads which were recently released.
Abbotsford junior Cody Friedenfels also was one of eight players overall who were unanimous selections to the all-Marawood North baseball team. Cheqaumegon's Christian Armstrong and Cole Bay also earned the honor along with Phillips' Austin Edwards and Ben Edwards, Prentice's Taylor Brayton and Rib Lake's Zane Mencheski.

Brayton was named the player of the year and Phillips' Bob Dural took the top coach honor.
Chequamegon's Cole Bay and Colt Logan of Prentice were both named to the first team as well.
Stratford senior Cole Hoffman was the Marawood South baseball player of the year and one of nine unanimous selection to the all-South Division squad.
Hoffman was one of three Stratford players who were a unanimous selection as Kade Ehrike and Lucas Heidmann both also earned the honor.
Pittsville also had three first team selections in seniors Jacob Neve and Aidan Masanz and junior Dakota Landphier. The Panthers' Bill Urban also was named the coach of the year.
Assumption's Brandon Birkhauser was a unanimous selection as well as Auburndale's Colton Wright and Northland Lutheran's Clay Schult.
Assumption junior Ethan Peters also was a first team selection.
SOFTBALL
Taylor Nelson earned the Marawood Conference South Division player of the year honor and was one of four Assumption players who were unanimous selections to the all-conference team.
Nelson’s teammates Erin Sullivan, Ellie Schill and Kendall Schill were unanimous selections to the all-South Division squad as well. The Royals captured the Marawood South title with an 11-0 mark in conference play.
Assumption’s Charlie Nelson and Rob Schill were selected as the Marawood South coaches of the year.
Six players were unanimous all-Marawood South selections. Besides the Assumption quartet, Marathon’s Elizabeth Boehm and Stratford’s Brittney Bredemann both earned the honor as well.
Boehm was one of three Marathon players to make the Marawood South first team and joined by teammates Amanda Kind and Sasha Hornung.
The South first team was rounded out by Stratford’s Kiana Weiler and Newman Catholic’s Lauren Fech.
Three Athens players were unanimous selections to the all-Marawood North team: seniors Paige Denzine and Berenice Lira and sophomore Kenadi Diedrich.
Edgar senior Lindsey Schneeberger was also a unanimous selection as was Cheqaumegon’s Remi Orr and Mackenzine Dane and Phillips’ Morgan Edwards, Ashley Kilty and Jojo Baratka.
Edwards earned the Marawood North player of the year nod, while Athens’ Craig Diedrich and Phillips’ Blake Edwards shared the top coach honor.
Phillips junior Lorren Sauter also was a first team selection.
