WAUSAU -  Three local programs are ranked in the first Associated Press state prep football poll of the season

Amherst is tied with Lodi for No. 2 in the Medium Division — schools with a student enrollment of 301-899 students — and Edgar and Iola-Scandinavia are ranked No. 2 and No. 10, respectively, in the Small Division. The state poll was released Tuesday afternoon.

Amherst travels to Fond du Lac for a matchup with Saint Mary's Springs, which is the No. 1 team in the Small Division. Springs received seven of the eight first-place votes in the poll. Black Hawk, which beat Owen-Withee in a season opener last Saturday, received the other first place vote.

The matchup is one of two nonconference matchups involving a local program and a highly-ranked state opponent.

Loyal, which received votes in the state poll, hosts Bangor on Friday. Bangor is ranked No. 3 in the Small Division while the Greyhounds received six votes in the same division.

Marathon, coming off a win over Mosinee in Week 1, received votes in the Small Division as did Stevens Point Area Senior High in the Large Division.

Kimberly and Catholic Memorial are both coming off of WIAA state championship seasons and were ranked No. 1 in the Large and Medium Divisions, respectively, in the state AP poll.

The first 8-man football poll was released by the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association on Tuesday as well. Newman Catholic, which rolled to a 41-12 win over Wausaukee on Saturday, is ranked No. 6. Phillips, which is also in its first year as an 8-man program, is No. 8 in the state poll.
