Amherst picks up first-place vote, remains fifth in AP state football poll

WAUSAU - Amherst received a first-place vote but remained fifth overall in the Medium Division in the fifth Associated Press state football poll of the year 

The Falcons (4-1) were one of four programs in the Medium Division to receive at least one first-place vote. Lodi received five but dropped one spot to second place in the division. Notre Dame received three first-place votes and moved to No. 1, just three points ahead of Lodi. 

Amherst was one of three local programs ranked in the state poll, which was released Tuesday afternoon. 

Edgar (5-0) maintained its spot as the No. 2 team in the Small Division as St. Mary's Springs remained the unanimous top-ranked program. Iola-Scandinavia (4-1) moved up one spot and is ranked ninth in the Small Division. 

Marathon (4-1) has rolled off three straight wins, scoring at least 50 points in each game and received votes in the Small Division as did Spencer/Columbus Catholic in the Medium Division. 

Newman Catholic is 5-0 for the first time since 1996 and remained No. 3 in the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association 8-man football poll. The Cardinals have been ranked in the state poll for all five weeks and travel to Gibraltar on Saturday.
