Trevor Anderson was named The Associated Press boys basketball player of the year Friday after helping Stevens Point Area Senior High to a second straight WIAA Division 1 state championship.

STEVENS POINT - Trev Anderson and Sam Hauser dominated the boys basketball postseason awards this winter.

The Stevens Point Area Senior High senior duo shared the player of the year honors for both the Wisconsin Valley Conference and Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association, and Hauser was named the Gatorade state player of the year earlier this week.

Anderson and Hauser, who helped the Panthers to an undefeated season and a second straight WIAA Division 1 state championship, were also the lone unanimous selections for The Associated Press boys basketball all-state team that was announced Friday, and Anderson was selected as the player of the year.

Anderson is the first local player to be receive the AP honor since 2011 when Merrill's Paul Jesperson received it.

Waupun coach Dan Domask, an Iola-Scandinavia graduate, was named the top coach after leading the school to the Division 3 title in the program's first trip to the state tournament in 89 years.

SPASH sophomore Joey Hauser was a second-team selection, while Amherst's Tyler Biadasz, Owen-Withee's Josiah Goerlitz and Port Edwards' Jared Joslin all received honorable mention consideration.

Anderson, SPASH's all-time leading scorer, was a first team all-state selection last year and surpassed 2,000 career points in December.

He averaged a team-best 24.9 points this season for a team that rolled to a 89-64 win over Muskego in the state title game and posted a 55-1 record over the past two seasons.

“All best friends on and off the court,” Anderson said of the Panthers. “There’s a lot of chemistry, a lot of fundamentals.”

Anderson has moved on to baseball and four-hour practices this week, though basketball remains his top sport. He has committed to play in college at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

The Phoenix play up-tempo under Linc Darner, who guided the school to an NCAA tournament appearance in his first year as head coach. Anderson said he plans to concentrate on getting stronger and quicker this summer.

“I’ve got to work on my lateral quickness if I want to play at the next level right away,” he said.

SPASH was used to playoff pressure. Waupun was ending a decades-long drought.

“Just the community around us, it was so meaningful to them,” Domask said.

The American history teacher tried to strike a balance with his players with every victory.

“I was trying to get the kids to understand what they were doing, and how meaningful it was, without putting pressure on them,” Domask said. “I don’t know if they ever fully got it until we got to the state tournament.”

Domask’s son, Marcus, scored a team-high 15 points in the 59-58 victory over Appleton Xavier in the thrilling title game.

The season opened with the coaching staff needing to figure out how to replace Domask’s older son, Mason, who graduated last season and had been the team’s leading scorer.

Marcus Domask, a freshman, helped fill the scoring void, as did Owen Theune, a sophomore transfer. A few other younger players added depth, with five seniors among the top seven in the rotation.

“This was one of those years where everything that could go right for your team kind of fell into place,” the coach said.
