Two Wisconsin Valley Conference players named to all-state girls soccer team
WAUSAU - Two local athletes are among the top girls soccer players in the state.
D.C. Everest sophomore Maddie Simpson and Stevens Point Area Senior High junior Abby Gemza were named to the second team for the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association all-state squad, which was released earlier this week.
Twenty-two players from across the state were named to either the first or second team. Brookfield Central midfielder Brandi Thomsen was selected as player of the year.
Simpson was the Wisconsin Valley Conference player of the year and led the league in scoring with 10 goals and 22 points overall. Simpson was an honorable mention all-state selection as a freshman.
Gemza was a unanimous selection to the all-WVC team and had five goals and 12 points overall for the Panthers, who won the conference championship and advanced to a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal.
The Panthers finished with a undefeated record in league play and a point ahead of the Evergreens in the conference standings.
Both Brookfield Central and Green Bay Notre Dame had two selections among the 11 players selected for the first team. Thomsen and senior forward Emma Staszkiewicz were chosen from Central, and senior midfielder Trudy Quidzinski and senior forward Grace Shaw were picked from Notre Dame.
Thomsen and Shaw were first-team selections for the second straight year as was Catholic Memorial goalkeeper Lili Berg, Divine Savior Holy Angels midfielder Megan Crevoiserat and Eau Claire Memorial forward Abigail Stow.
