Baseball, softball players get nod for strong seasons in Marawood Conference

Assumption’s Kendall Schill earned the Marawood Conference  South Division softball player of the year honor this spring as she helped the Royals reach the WIAA state tournament.

ATHENS - Seth Coker led Athens in nearly every offensive category this past prep baseball season and is a reason the Bluejays were able to defend their WIAA Division 4 state championship.

The junior finished the season with a .580 batting average and .870 slugging percentage and drove in 38 runs to earn the Marawood Conference North Division player of the year honor.

It is among the highlights for the athletes who were named all-Marawood Conference for baseball and softball in the North and South divisions this spring.

Athens junior Seth Coker is a reason why the Bluejays won a second straight WIAA Division 4 state baseball championship this season. He also earned the Marawood Conference North Division baseball player of the year nod.

Coker was one of three unanimous all-conference selections for the Bluejays, who won the league title. Seniors Marshall Westfall and Klay Ellenbecker also received the nod. 

All 10 members for the first team all-Marawood North squad were unanimous picks, including Abbotsford senior Cody Friedenfels. 

Both Chequamegon (Dawson Weik, Alec O'Mera) and Phillips (Collin Krause, Ben Edwards) had two players on the first team. Juniors Trace Brayton and Zane Mencheski of Prentice and Rib Lake, respectively, round out the team. 

Assumption's Ethan Peters leads the All-Marawood South baseball team as he was named the league's player of the year and was one of eight unanimous selections to the first team. 

Marathon, which won the Marawood South title, had three unanimous picks with senior Riley Anderson and juniors Carter Hanke and Mitchell Kurtz. 

Auburndale senior Cam Ertl and junior Colton Wright were unanimous picks as was Edgar's Austin Miller and Stratford's Eli Drexler. 

Assumption senior Jake Sullivan and Stratford senior Mark Handrick were selected to the first team as well. 

SOFTBALL

Assumption had four unanimous selections to the all-Marawood South squad, led by the league's player of the year — sophomore Kendall Schill.

Schill, a pitcher and third baseman, posted a 14-4 record and a 2.60 ERA and a .375 batting average for the Royals, who captured the Marawood South title and reached the WIAA Division 5 state semifinals. 

Schill was joined on the all-conference squad by senior teammates Erin Sullivan and Ellie Schill and junior Ellie Leberg for a Royals team that went 16-5 overall. 

Assumption's Charlie Nelson shared the Marawood South coach of the year honor with Marathon's Chad Thurs. 

Marathon had three unanimous selections to the all-conference squad in seniors Sasha Hornung and Kenya Kaldunski and sophomore Hannah Hornung.

Auburndale junior Mackenzie Raab and Stratford senior Kiana Weiler were also unanimous selections. Stratford sophomore Paige Kolbeck rounded out the 10-player first team. 

Athens had two unanimous selections to the all-Marawood North team — senior Kaitlyn Brooks and junior Kenadi Diedrich. Bluejays teammate, junior Carley Lipinski also was selected to the 10-player first team. 

Chequamegon junior Hannah Borne was the Marawood North player of the year and a unanimous selection to the all-conference squad along with teammates Mackenzie Dane and Josi Orr. Chequamegon's Ken Discher was named the top coach as he led his team to an undefeated conference record. 

Phillips had three unanimous selections — seniors Ashley Kilty and Lorren Sauter and freshman Rachel Callow. Rib Lake junior Sam Rodman was a unanimous pick as well.
